Woollahra Council, alert to the increasing risks of loss from trading and conversion to residential use of many of Paddington’s historic hotels, commissioned the practice to assess the heritage significance and suitability for listing of several hotels within the suburb in 2019.
Developed together with the housing and streetscapes amidst which they are prominent, the hotels are historically and architecturally inseparable from the stories and cultural life of Paddington, and individually contribute to the significance of the suburb and its Urban Conservation Area.
Supported by detailed historical research undertaken by hotels historian Dr. Mark Dunn, the assessments and recommended listings of the hotels were adopted by Council in 2020 and have proceeded to inclusion in the Woollahra Local Environmental Plan.
