A House in the Mountains |
“Eastcote” was built c. 1935 as “Shasta Cottage”, a modest, single storey iron-roofed weatherboard and brick mountain retreat, set within an established garden of an earlier house. Located within a Conservation Area and Sensitive Environmental Zone, “Eastcote” was not heritage-listed, but its gardens and grounds were.
To suit the intended use of the house for entertaining friends and family, additional bedrooms and bathrooms were added to the original cottage in a new upper level. A new entrance, stair hall and dining room were created ; the existing service areas were adapted and a new integrated garage incorporated to provide comfortable all-weather access. Externally “Eastcote” remained a simple if larger, weatherboard and corrugated steel roofed mountains house, with new and more comfortable interiors responding to the owner’s interests and detailed requirements.
The adapted house was beautifully realised by Trevor Dale and his team of local craftsmen. While the house was being re-imagined, Michael Cooke and the late owner invested the overgrown but remarkable gardens with a joyous renewal, featuring new terraces, walks, comprehensive plantings and fine detail, creating an enriched setting for the house, which with good stewardship, time will only consolidate.
The accompanying photographs record the property at completion ; the house now has a new owner.
